Alone, broke and staring the foreclosure of his business in the face, Earl Stone is forced to accept the only job available, which is a drug courier for the cartel in Mexico. By enjoying immediate success, he soon finds out that it is easy money and as he accepts larger shipments, he draws the attention of Colin Bates a DEA agent. What starts to weigh on Earl’s conscience is the mistakes he made in the past and he needs to decide to correct those mistakes before the cartel or law enforcement catches him.

The Mule film is inspired by the true events of a man with a new job and his estranged family, Earl Stone is a horticulturist as well as a vet specializing in daylilies. The film catches up with Stone in 2005 when he does not attend the wedding of his daughter in order to attend a horticulturist convention. The film then picks up on his life twelve years later when Stone loses his farm as the main source of business have by then move to e-commerce florist, while at this point, he already lost his family.
Stone manages to find a new job as he heard that some guy pays good money if he is prepared to drive and this is the start of his drug-running days. While he is sceptical in the beginning, he starts to enjoy the money and the trips. He actually loves the travelling that takes him far away from his home and he gets to enjoy the sights and different foods and the entertainment. Although being a mule for the Mexican drug cartel or anyone else is never easy, not even for a guy like Stone enjoying the trips. With a bit of drama in the leadership of the cartel and two DEA agents closing in on him, it all starts to crumble, and Stone need to decide between his family and work.
