A silver screen is an exciting place with a vibrant collage of heroes and villains, legends and of course a good dollop of gamblers too. These are the ones who keep our imagination running wild and leave us with a deep desire to be just like them. So who are some of the greatest gambling wizards of the times?

The Gambler

Most readers will probably recognize James Caan as the well-known former Special Forces casino boss, Ed Deline, from the hit series Las Vegas. This was, however, not the first time that Caan was portraying a role in the gambling industry, and it was most likely also not his most significant role either. He was first seen in the position of an English professor with a severe gambling addiction called Axel Freed. His habits spun entirely out of control, and regardless of all his efforts to try and control it, he just got deeper into trouble. One of his lowest points occurred when he fixed a fight to solve his financial concerns. In the end, his character goes through an amazing transformation when he finally faces the man he has become.

Lucky You

He has a very complicated relationship with his dad and the ladies, but Huck Cheever is also a young poker player and a brilliant cheater. During the run of the movie, viewers get pulled in as he is gambling with money and life. He desires a healthy life and finds himself in desperate need of $10 000 to be able to get buy-in into a great tournament. As the movie progresses, Cheever goes through significant personal development and discovers the real importance of life.

A Big Hand for the Little Lady

Mary’s husband is a farmhand, but also a recovering gambler. Through some severe gambling misfortune, her husband lost all their money and all of their possessions. Mary is left in a tight spot with no idea what to do about their situation. Her husband suffers some poor health and collapses at the game, but then Mary gets a place at the table and with some borrowed money, win all their money back and some more. Before you fall into the trap of feeling the urge to give Mary a hero’s applause, the movie reveals that Mary and her family are a bunch of con-artists who are busy with a plot of revenge aimed at the fellow gamblers around the table.

California Split

Bill Denny is a newbie on the block with a seriously cunning side, and he is quickly learning some needed skills. Charlie Waters is a real and seasoned gambler. During their run on several tournaments, they would operate as a team with Waters analyzing the opponents around the table while Denny will take every single sent they own from them. The story tells the tale of what can happen if you mingle with the wrong crowd. These two taught the world a thing or two about the reality of being seasoned in the world of gambling.
